Heavy-Duty Laser Manufacturing for the Energy Sector

From Offshore Wind Giants to Transcontinental Pipelines—Fabricating the Infrastructure of Tomorrow.

The global energy sector stands at a critical juncture. We are witnessing a dual challenge: the imperative to maintain and optimize the robust infrastructure of traditional Oil & Gas, while simultaneously scaling up the massive production required for Renewable Energy—Wind, Solar, and Hydro.

Whether you are fabricating jacket foundations for offshore wind farms in the North Sea or processing high-pressure pipelines for a refinery in the Middle East, the manufacturing demands are converging. The industry is moving away from the slow, heat-intensive methods of the past (like Oxy-fuel) and demanding tighter tolerances, faster weld preparation, and the ability to process new, corrosion-resistant superalloys.

YIHAI LASER is the heavy-industry partner for this transition. We have moved beyond the “thin sheet” stigma of early lasers. With our Ultra-High Power Fiber Lasers (20kW, 30kW, and 60kW) and massive ground-rail gantry systems, we bring the speed and precision of light to the heavyweights of the industrial world.

Here is how we are helping EPC contractors and fabricators power the planet.

Beyond Plasma: The Shift to High-Power Fiber Lasers

For decades, processing thick carbon steel plate (20mm to 50mm) was the exclusive domain of Plasma and Oxy-fuel cutting. While effective, these methods come with a heavy cost: extensive Heat-Affected Zones (HAZ), tapered edges, and the inevitable need for secondary grinding to remove dross.

The introduction of 30kW+ Fiber Laser Technology has fundamentally changed this equation.

The Thickness Frontier

YIHAI LASER’s high-power systems can now cut 50mm to 80mm carbon steel with a vertical, dross-free edge that is ready for welding immediately. We are replacing the “Cut –>Grind –> Weld” cycle with a direct “Cut –> Weld” workflow. This elimination of secondary processing steps can reduce project turnaround times by up to 40%.

Large Format Fabrication

Energy components are not small. Wind tower sections, heat exchanger plates, and ship hull segments require massive working envelopes. Standard 3times 1.5m tables are insufficient.

YIHAI LASER engineers Ground Rail Gantry Systems—modular cutting beds that can be extended to 20 meters, 30 meters, or longer. These systems allow operators to load multiple large heavy plates at once, enabling continuous cutting operations where one side of the table is unloaded while the laser continues working on the other, maximizing arc-on time.

Pipelines and Refineries: Processing Corrosion-Resistant Alloys

The Oil & Gas sector (Upstream and Midstream) operates under extreme pressure—literally. Components must withstand thousands of PSI and highly corrosive “sour gas” (H2S) environments. Precision is not just about fit-up; it is about structural integrity.

Processing Exotic Alloys (Inconel & Duplex)

Downhole tools, subsea valves, and heat exchangers are increasingly made from Super Duplex Stainless Steel, Inconel, and Hastelloy to resist corrosion. Thermal cutting methods like Oxy-fuel simply cannot cut these non-ferrous alloys. Plasma can, but it leaves a messy, oxidized edge that requires heavy machining. High-Power Fiber Lasers cut these exotic materials cleanly. Because the laser energy density is so high, it vaporizes the metal instantly, minimizing heat transfer into the surrounding material. This preserves the corrosion-resistant grain structure of the alloy, which is critical for subsea longevity.

Laser Cladding for Valve Repair (MRO)

In the oilfield, drilling components like stabilizers and gate valves are subjected to extreme abrasion. Replacing these expensive parts is costly and wasteful. YIHAI LASER Cladding Systems offer a sustainable MRO solution. We use a laser beam to melt a wear-resistant metal powder (such as Stellite or Tungsten Carbide) onto the worn surface of the component. This metallurgical bond is stronger than a spray coating and has low dilution with the base metal. We restore the part to its original dimension with a surface harder than the original, extending its service life significantly.

Wind Power: Fabricating Giants of the Sea

As wind turbines grow to 15MW capacities and beyond, the manufacturing challenges scale with them. Fabricating the massive steel towers and the complex offshore jacket foundations requires processing enormous volumes of thick steel with absolute reliability.

Tower Flange and Door Frame Cutting

The structural integrity of a wind tower relies on the thick steel flanges that connect the sections. These flanges, often 50mm to 100mm thick, require precise bolt-hole patterns.

YIHAI LASER’s ultra-high-power gantries pierce and cut these thick plates with vertical precision. Unlike flame cutting, which can overheat the web between holes, the laser maintains the structural hardness of the steel. We also process the complex door frame cutouts in the base tower sections, ensuring a perfect fit for the door modules.

Weld Seam Cleaning (Pre/Post Weld)

A wind tower is essentially one giant weldment. Before welding, the steel plate edges must be absolutely free of mill scale, rust, and oil to prevent hydrogen embrittlement and weld defects.

Sandblasting is messy and difficult to automate for specific strip cleaning. YIHAI LASER Cleaning Machines are integrated into the welding line. They strip a precise 50mm band of mill scale on either side of the weld joint at high speeds, ensuring a virgin metal surface for the Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) process.

Solar Energy: High-Speed Production for Photovoltaic Racking

While Oil and Wind are about “Heavy and Thick,” Solar is about “Volume and Speed.” Utility-scale solar farms require millions of steel supports (torque tubes) and racking components. The margin is made on the manufacturing cost per part.

Tube Cutting for Solar Trackers (Torque Tubes)

Solar trackers rotate panels to follow the sun using long steel tubes (torque tubes). These tubes need holes for fasteners and slots for panel mounting. YIHAI LASER’s Automatic Tube Cutting Lines are the industry standard for this application.

  • Bundle Loading: Our machines automatically load bundles of raw tubes, minimizing operator intervention.

  • Fly Cutting: The laser cuts slots and holes while the tube is feeding at high speed, achieving cycle times measured in seconds. This throughput is essential to meet the gigawatt-scale demands of modern solar projects.

Cutting Galvanized Steel

Solar structures must survive outdoors for 25 years. They are typically made of Galvanized Steel or Zn-Al-Mg coated steel. Traditional cutting burns off the zinc coating for millimeters around the cut, leading to rust. YIHAI LASER optimizes the cutting process using high-pressure Nitrogen or Air assist gas. This keeps the cut zone cool and minimizes the damage to the zinc layer, often allowing the sacrificial protection of the zinc to “heal” the cut edge, maintaining corrosion resistance without secondary painting.

Field Maintenance: Laser Cleaning for Infrastructure Integrity

The global energy infrastructure—thousands of miles of pipelines, massive storage tank farms, and offshore rigs—is fighting a constant war against corrosion. Maintaining these assets is a billion-dollar MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) industry.

Pipeline Corrosion Removal

Before pipelines can be inspected using Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods like ultrasound, the rust and old coatings must be removed. Handheld Laser Cleaning is the superior tool for this field work. It requires no consumables (like sand grit) and creates no secondary waste stream. Crews can clean a weld joint in the middle of a remote field without needing a grit reclamation truck. The laser reveals the bare metal surface instantly, allowing for accurate inspection of cracks or wall thinning.

Storage Tank Paint Stripping

Repainting large oil storage tanks involves stripping layers of old, possibly lead-based paint. Sandblasting generates tons of contaminated hazardous waste. YIHAI LASER’s robotic crawlers or handheld units vaporize the paint, capturing the fumes in a filtration system. This reduces the environmental footprint of the maintenance operation and improves safety for the work crew by reducing exposure to hazardous dust.

Built for the Heavy Industry: Why YIHAI LASER?

The energy sector does not forgive equipment failure. You need machines built to withstand the realities of heavy fabrication.

1. Ultra-High Power Capability (30kW – 60kW)

We are not just dabbling in high power; we are leading the integration of 30kW and 60kW fiber laser sources. We have mastered the optical thermal management and cutting head technology required to harness this immense power stably, giving you the ability to cut 100mm steel in production.

2. Beveling Technology

In the energy sector, a flat cut is rarely enough. Our 3D 5-Axis Beveling Heads allow for  ±45° bevel cuts on both flat plates and tubes. We help you skip the grinding station and send parts straight to the welding robot.

3. Large Format Customization

We understand that energy components are oversized. We build machines to fit your factory, not the other way around. Whether you need a 4m wide gantry for shipbuilding plates or a 12m tube cutter for structural columns, YIHAI LASER delivers tailored heavy-duty solutions.

    Energy Sector Laser Solutions FAQ

Q1: Can your laser machines cut bevels on pipe for immediate welding?

A: Yes. Our 5-Axis Tube Laser Cutters are specifically designed for this. They can generate V, Y, K, and X bevels up to 45 degrees in a single pass. This edge quality is superior to flame cutting and precise enough for automated orbital welding without manual grinding.

Q2: How thick can a 30kW laser realistically cut mild steel in a production environment?

A: For consistent, high-quality production cutting (where the edge is vertical and dross-free), a 30kW laser can handle Carbon Steel up to 70mm–80mm. For severance cuts (separating material where edge quality is less critical), it can process thicknesses exceeding 100mm.

Q3: Is laser cleaning safe for use in explosive environments (e.g., refineries)?

A: Laser cleaning is a thermal process and is generally classified as “Hot Work.” While it produces significantly fewer sparks than angle grinding, strict safety protocols and Hot Work Permits are required in ATEX (explosive atmosphere) zones. However, for shutdowns and maintenance turnarounds where the area is gas-free, it offers a much faster and cleaner alternative to blasting.
